A Quiet, But Active, Phase

March 8, 2018

Since December, most of the work on our new campus has happened indoors in the “bunker”—a low, pre-existing building that houses fire and water pumps and our main electrical switchgear. There, numerous skilled tradespeople have finished the complex mechanical and plumbing work needed before the “superstructure,” or concrete frame, of the building can begin to rise. Workers have also been constructing the concrete columns in the bunker that will help support the building.

At the moment, we are completing additional preparatory work required before beginning to build the superstructure this spring. For instance, per the Department of Transportation, there have been traffic and parking changes made on 122nd and 123rd streets, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. In addition, barricades have been relocated and new pedestrian protections installed. These changes are designed to ensure the safety of pedestrians and the safe flow of traffic.

Unrelated to the 21st Century Campus, there has also been a team on site installing new roofing on all of our buildings. This work is expected to be finished in about a month, and the company handling the project will begin dismantling its equipment.
